Still shopping…

So my friend and coworker Iuli decided last week to think about buying a condo. She checked her finances (apparently, her husband’s finances are dreadful, but hers are phenomenal), and they were good. She found a condo coming available in her property. She took a look.

She’s already planning on buying it, it’s FSBO, she has a friend as an agent, she has plans for what improvements are needed…

Meanwhile, Mandrina and I still haven’t managed to find a house.

We went looking again on Tuesday(? — it may have been Monday), up in Everett. There was one house Manda had really wanted to look at, and Charles had pulled a few others that might interest us. And we were interested in two of them.

The first one we looked at that day, and the last.

But for what they’re asking, they’re just not worth it! The one house is trying to include a 800 sqft unfinished basement in the price, and although the built-in garage is something that appeals to me, as does the downstairs half-bath, the tiny lot size, commute, and general location just didn’t hold much appeal for me. Don’t get me wrong, it was a nice house (no, you can’t have the address), aside from the unfinished basement. The finished parts Manda loved, for a change. She hated the aluminum siding, which is to be expected.

The other house need fencing as well, and while it felt smaller, the lot was larger, and the house was about the same size. The yard was not 100% useful, but a sledgehammer could get rid of some of the pavement. However, at least part of the upper floor wasn’t insulated, and neither Mandrina nor I LOVED the place. So… why hurry to enter into contract on it before leaving for the holidays?

There is a house we’re still kinda looking at. It’s a 1900ish Victorian that at least appears to be in good shape. It has storage in the attic, 3 bedrooms, and a clawfoot tub downstairs, and 3/4 bath upstairs. The master bedroom is huge, but the 3/4 bath is off one of the smaller rooms. I think the attic was empty for storage purposes. Stained glass windows, people!

So, what’s it’s problems? a) It’s just been rezoned for commercial. It’s still a residential community at the moment, within walking distance of Snohomish downtown, but… who’s to tell what comes next? But that pales behind the other issue.

The owners of the property bought part of the lot behind this house’s lot. They’re planning on taking some land from each plot to build a duplex townhouse. Okay, fine.

Only problem, said duplex has no road access.

So what are they doing? A fifteen-foot wide easement on what would be MY property for a driveway from the street to the back lot. I’d pay taxes on it. I’d have to sell it with my lot if I were to sell. And it’s priced including the easement, which costs us over 1200 sqft of lot size.

I like the house. It has at least a comparable commute to Everett, maybe better. But I’m not buying a lot to pay taxes on land I can’t use!

BLEH. Some people find a condo in three days, I’m going on four months. This is just not fun!

It’s December when?

So today is Wednesday, December 14th, 2005.

I have done no Christmas shopping. I have barely thought about what to buy people for the holidays. In addition, I need to finish a huge bunch of stuff at work which I’m just slightly overdue on, and I need to plan and pack for our trip back to New York for the holidays.

Including arranging for Glitch-care. My kitten is so cute! Okay, so he’s a year old, but still.

So here’s my hideously embarassing to-do list:

  1. Choose Christmas gifts for cousin Jenny and Aunt Pam and Uncle Bob, and Mandrina’s family
  2. Ship Christmas presents to aforementioned individuals
  3. Verify that Mandrina is truly okay with not getting anything for Christmas — delayed large gift to each other on top of the trip out there should count for something!
  4. Choose Christmas gifts for K, L, M, D, Luke, and Alva
  5. Order anything necessary, ship direct to NY
  6. Figure out who is going to be visited on LI
  7. Schedule as possible events for NY trip
  8. Decide what to pack
  9. Panic and do laundry
  10. Meet up with Jamie and provide house keys and guidance on Glitch-visitation procedures
  11. Get cat food and litter
  12. Finish processing video files for Manda
  13. Pack
  14. Pack laptop
  15. Repack clothes with Mandrina
  16. Give in and buy small present for Mandrina
  17. Panic

There will be some work in there, too. And a hair cut. And a blood donation. And Mandrina’s in an ice show on Friday night. And we’re going sledding on Saturday. Now MIGHT be the right time to Panic.

So far I know I’m going to see the following people in NY. If you read this and aren’t on the list, don’t be offended! I’m going to deliberately leave off certain individuals just so you can’t feel too bad! But email me so I remember, just in case.

  • Al
  • Mishu
  • Gabe
  • Rachel
  • Jenn, oh, wait, she abandoned me…
  • TA
  • Brian
  • Mike P.
  • Tommy C.’s crew

You know, that isn’t as scary as I expected. Admittedly, you take out Christmas Eve and Christmas, maybe New Year’s Eve or Day… and then factor in family I’ve not seen for over a year and Mandrina’s obsession with NY… it could get busy. It will get busy. Mandrina and I will have to talk about taking a “rest day.” So that maybe, just maybe, I can SLEEP.

Everyone else I know got a spanking…

Dear Santa…

Dear Santa,

This year I’ve been busy!

Last Wednesday I committed genocide… Sorry about that, (-5000 points). Last week I saved a busload of nuns in Angola (326 points). Last month I gave a life-saving blood transfusion (50 points). In February I farted in an elevator (-6 points). Last Monday I punched in the arm (-10 points).

Overall, I’ve been naughty (-4640 points). For Christmas I deserve a lump of coal!

Sincerely,
Nevyn522

Bad, bad sign…

I glanced quickly at my email, and felt oddly detached and comforted to see the line, “Some hope for you.”

Then I reread it, and it was from Charles (still!) saying, “Some homes for you.”

Apparently, there’s no hope for me yet…

NaNoFailMo 2005

So once again I got distracted by “Real Life” and failed to finish my Nano.

This year at least I can tack “Work” on as a good excuse, as I have far too much to do, and far too little time to do it in. For a change, I actually have something to do… I just can’t tell you about it. Classified, NDA, etc. I can tell you that it’s a miserible experience to have to work with two unfamiliar codebases that both share a great deal in common with failed experiments in software design.

How to know things are going south rapidly:
1) Never get a full answer to a question. “What do I need to do to do this?” “A.” “I did A, it didn’t work.” “Oh, you need to do B as well.” Repeat.
2) Work with code that pretends to be interface based, but not actually having any of the benefits of COM-programming, but all the problems. When asked, have the person who designed the code admit, “It probably would have been better if I knew more of COM before doing this.”
3) Ask a question, “Why doesn’t this work?” Ask three people: “Oh, you need to do this, you need to do this other thing…” Ask person 4 after two days: “Oh, that’s a known issue. Was broken for a while, has been fixed.”
4) The specification still hasn’t been completed.
5) “Does it need to support Undo?” “No.” Two months later: “Well, sort of… not directly…” Ten minutes later: “Yes.”

It just isn’t a good situation, and I’m now working with the same teams again on a different project once this is done. Yay.

So I managed to fail to accomplish anything, but I make a hell of a lot of progress doing it. Damn, this is depressing, and didn’t start out as such.
